The proliferation of rich-media (images, video, games etc.) wireless devices and high bandwidth networks worldwide has impelled wireless carriers to explore newer and more sophisticated applications and revenue generation mechanisms. However, generating additional revenue implies that the carrier has to impart some kind of “value added” services to the user beyond the ability to download rich-media.
A deeper examination of media/knowledge sharing applications among users in a rich-media environment reveals that the following features are essential for a user to perceive that there is some value in addition the content they have downloaded:
- Recommendation Engine: Ability of the system to recommend content based on the user’s interests
- Rating Engine: Capability of the system to allow users to actively contribute to the information they access by rating the content they browse
- Peer-to-Peer Sharing and Community Creation: Ease of sharing of content/reviews/opinions and perceptible rewards from such actions. Ability of the user to easily form a community of other users (bearing common interests) with whom to share content/messages
- Dynamic Portal: Repositioning of links on the screen based on past user behavior
We aim to provide such a framework for wireless users with our expertise in J2ME and Symbian for the client side and J2EE for the server side.
